Professional athletes like Ali Riley spend a lot of time on the field and in the gym, which means a lot of sweat! Sweat is evidence of a great workout, but, combined with the sun and heat, can be rough on our skin. It feels great to take a nice cold shower after a workout or game. Rinsing off and doing some self-care, including your skincare routine, is a great way to unwind, recharge and ensure that your skin is taken care of and not clogged by sweat.
In addition to your standard skincare routine, it’s good to add a few extra steps and treatments in here and there. These additional steps should be catered to your skin’s specific needs. It can be tempting to purchase lots of fancy products you see advertisements for, and though some of them may truly deliver the benefits they claim to offer, the truth is, you can make great skincare products right in your own kitchen. One of Ali Riley’s go-to skincare routine steps is her DIY Manuka Honey Scrub. She uses this scrub on both her lips and face.
Mixed up in just a few minutes, this scrub does a great job of exfoliating while still being gentle on the skin. Made with all natural ingredients you already have in your kitchen, it exfoliates and moisturizes without harsh chemicals or artificial additives. With a Wedderspoon Manuka Honey base, this scrub naturally helps reduce redness and irritation. The sugar and salt effectively cleanse the skin and help clear out pores. For this scrub to be the most effective, it’s a good idea to prep your skin by placing a warm damp cloth over your face for five to ten minutes ahead of time to increase circulation and open your pores.
Ali’s favorite scrub recipe will leave your lips moisturized, soft and supple. It’s especially great to use before a night out because prepping your lips with this scrub will allow you to apply lipstick more smoothly and evenly.
Not only is this lip and face scrub effective, but it smells absolutely delicious. We won’t judge you for taking a little lick of it before rinsing it off! The recipe below includes ingredient portions to make enough scrub for your full face. If you are just using this for your lips, you will have some leftover which you can store in an airtight container in the fridge for a week or so.
Ingredients
-
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon brown sugar
- pinch of salt
Directions
Add all ingredients to a bowl
- Gently mix until well combined
- Apply to face or lips right away, or store in an airtight container in the fridge for a few days.
Recipe Note
To use this scrub, first, ensure that your skin and/or lips are clean and free of any makeup or sweat. Gently apply a generous layer and massage into the skin for a minute or two. Then, rinse off using warm water. Be sure to finish this routine by applying your favorite skin moisturizer or lip balm.
