Hot chocolate is basically synonymous with winter. It’s a delicious, indulgent treat enjoyed during the cold weather months. A mug of hot chocolate is also often reminiscent of great memories, like snow days, holiday parties and ski trips.
There are countless ways to make hot chocolate, whether it’s using a store-bought packet mixed with water or milk, or making it from scratch. And, flavor options vary too. However, not all cups of hot chocolate are equal. Sure, a store-bought packet does the job if you’re in a rush, or serving to the masses at an outdoor event, but, when you’re at home, looking to enjoy a nice cup of hot chocolate by the fireplace, why not treat yourself to a cup that’s not only more authentic and delicious, but also healthier.
When you make hot chocolate from scratch, you can avoid all the not-so-great ingredients you may find in the easy-mix packets. You can also control the sweetness and other flavors you may want to alter.
This winter, we want to share a healthy hot chocolate recipe with you. It’s quite simple to make, but absolutely delicious! It’s easy enough to make on the whim for the whole family to enjoy. Sip on this hot chocolate on a chilly night while you enjoy family time or watch a holiday movie. It will warm you up and get you into a festive mood.
As-is, our recipe is dairy-free. While we suggest using almond milk, you can certainly use any kind of milk you prefer. This recipe makes standard hot chocolate, sweetened with Manuka Honey and vanilla extract. It’s thick, creamy and chocolatey with a hint of honey and vanilla to enhance the taste. However, if you want to get fancy, you could try adding a bit of peppermint, espresso, nutella, cinnamon or any other flavor you want, to give it a specific taste or switch things up if you make this multiple times. It’s best enjoyed in a festive mug topped with whipped cream and marshmallows, of course.
Not quite ready to try this recipe just yet? Save it for a snowy day and surprise the kids after they come in from playing in the snow, or try it when you host friends and family for a celebration this season. While this recipe is meant for the entire family, it could also be boozed up for the adults. A splash of irish cream, schnapps or even a dry red wine would turn this into a real treat for the adults!
Note that this is best served fresh, right off the stove, so it’s best not to make extra to store. However, luckily, this can be made in just a few minutes so making ahead isn’t really necessary.
